Private-Label Halloween Costume Programs: Colorways, Trims and Packaging

Private label is often described as putting your name on a stock product. In practice, the brands that sell well do more than that: they choose a colourway their customer cannot find elsewhere, change a trim that photographs badly, and pack the product so it feels like a deliberate purchase rather than a commodity.

This article is a planning guide for a private-label Halloween range, using the decisions that matter most: colour, trim, labels and packaging. It assumes you already have a style or a small group of styles and want to make them yours.

Start with a colourway strategy

Colour is the cheapest way to differentiate a stock style. A black jacket with gold buttons becomes a different product in navy, burgundy or forest green. The sample range we reviewed uses four colours across a military-inspired jacket and skirt set, and four colours across a child’s embroidered tailcoat. That is enough to create a story without multiplying inventory.

Choose two or three colours per style: one core colour that will sell across seasons, one seasonal colour that fits the campaign, and one accent or limited colour for photography and differentiation.

Confirm the dye lot before production. A deep red or green can shift between lots, and a reorder that does not match the first run is a problem for a brand that sells online. Ask for a production swatch and keep a reference sample.

Change a trim, not the whole design

A private-label program does not always need a new pattern. Changing the buttons, braid, lace or lining can make a stock style look exclusive. For a Halloween range, the highest-impact changes are usually:

  • Buttons and hardware — antique gold instead of bright gold, black instead of silver, or a custom crest.
  • Braid and piping — a wider or narrower braid changes the period feel without a new pattern.
  • Lining colour — a contrast lining adds a premium detail that photographs well when the garment moves.
  • Lace and appliqué — a different lace scale or motif can shift the style from sweet to gothic.
  • Labels — a woven label at the neck and a brand tag at the waist are the minimum for a private-label product.

Any trim change should be tested on a sample. A heavier braid can pull a lightweight fabric; a stiffer lace can change the drape. Confirm the trim is available in the quantity you need before committing to the colourway.

Packaging that fits the channel

Packaging is part of the product, especially for online sales. A costume that arrives in a plain polybag with a handwritten size sticker feels cheaper than the same costume in a branded bag with a printed size label. The right packaging depends on where you sell:

ChannelPackagingWhat to confirm
Online marketplacePolybag with a printed size sticker and barcodeBarcode scans; bag is strong enough for shipping
Own webshopBranded bag or box with tissue and a care cardBrand colours; insert size and care instructions
Retail storeHanger with a brand tag and a size labelHanger type; steam/crease resistance
Theatre or rentalGarment bag with a style and size labelBreathable bag; repair and replacement parts

If you ship internationally, confirm the carton mark, the country of origin label and any fibre-content or care labelling required in your market. These requirements vary, so check them with your compliance adviser rather than assuming a generic label is enough.

The production sequence

A private-label program follows the same path as a custom style, with a shorter development phase if the base style already exists:

  1. Brief — base style, colourways, trims, labels, packaging and target price.
  2. Sample — confirm the colour and trim on a physical sample; approve in writing.
  3. Pre-production — finalise the label placement, packaging and carton mark.
  4. Bulk — production, in-line checks and final inspection.
  5. Packing — label, bag, barcode and carton audit.

Stock styles can sample in 3–7 working days and produce in 2–4 weeks after approval and deposit. A program with new trims or packaging may need extra time for sourcing. Custom designs typically take 6–10 weeks. Plan backwards from the retail date and add a buffer for peak season.

What to check before bulk

  • Does the production swatch match the approved colour under daylight and indoor light?
  • Is the trim the correct width, finish and shade?
  • Are the labels in the right position and the right size?
  • Does the barcode scan and match the carton mark?
  • Is the packing method suitable for the shipping route?
  • Has the largest size been fitted with the final trims?

Our OEM/ODM service covers colourways, trims, labels and packaging for stock and custom styles. Send the base style, target colours and retail date through the inquiry form, and we will confirm the sampling and production plan.

FAQ

What is a private-label costume program?

A private-label program produces a stock or adapted costume under your brand, with your chosen colours, trims, labels and packaging. It can start from an existing style or from a custom design.

What is the minimum order for private-label costumes?

Custom designs typically start at 100–300 pieces per style and colour. Stock styles can start from one piece for a trial, with bulk pricing from 10 pieces. Confirm the MOQ for your chosen colour and trim before planning the range.

Can you add my label and packaging?

Yes. We can produce with your woven labels, size stickers, barcodes, bags and carton marks. Provide the artwork and placement instructions before production so the packaging matches your sales channel.

How long does a private-label order take?

Stock styles typically sample in 3–7 working days and produce in 2–4 weeks after approval and deposit. Custom designs usually take 6–10 weeks. Add freight time and book capacity early for peak season.
